Mallow to Dungarvan Greenway News
Welcome to the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway project information page. Here you will find information about the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway project, updates about the current activities surrounding the project, and links to the public consultation portal to provide your feedback.
The Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway is a proposed approximately 74-kilometre long walking and cycling path that would connect Dungarvan in County Waterford to Mallow in County Cork. It is anticipated that the greenway will generally follow the route of the abandoned rail line between Dungarvan and Mallow. This path would also pass through or link to the towns and villages of Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballyduff, Clondulane, Fermoy, Ballyhooly, and Killavullen.
Our Vision Statement
The vision for the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway is to create a walking and cycling path between Dungarvan and Mallow that provides for a world class tourism and recreational experience for people of all ages and abilities. Following the path of the now abandoned Dungarvan to Mallow railway, the greenway will integrate with and enhance the existing natural and built features of the region to support the economic development of communities and health of citizens in County Waterford and County Cork.
Project Development Process
The current feasibility and route options assessment study represents the first of multiple steps that are required to bring a project from concept to reality. The figure below provides a summary of this process.
The current feasibility and options assessment project has preliminary completed the first step of the delivery process including the strategic and route corridor assessment and is preparing to move to the constraints analysis step.
Outcomes of Step 1: Strategic and Route Corridor Assessment
At the conclusion of the initial step of the feasibility and route options assessment project, two key things have been accomplished. First, it is confirmed that the proposed greenway would meet/help achieve strategic planning goals. This determination was based on a review of national, regional, and local planning and policy documents including:
|National Documents||Local Documents||Regional Documents|
Secondly, the project has confirmed that the most feasible route corridor to develop more detailed greenway route options in is along the abandoned railway line. Additional information about the process used to confirm these details can be found in the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway Stage 1 Assessment Summary Report.
Benefits of the Scheme
Constructing a greenway between Dungarvan and Mallow would provide numerous benefits including:
What has happened previously?
The project commenced in the summer of 2021. Since then, the project team has begun collecting and reviewing data for the area including reviewing national, regional, and local development plans, reviewing previous and on-going greenways to collect lessons learned, and initiating coordination between the multiple local authorities and stakeholders.
Additionally, the project has completed the Stage 1 route corridor assessment which has confirmed the greenway should generally follow the route of the abandoned railway line.
What is happening now?
The project is currently collecting feedback about the selected route corridor and moving into the constraints analysis phase. Through this process, the project will collect and analyse different environmental, technical, and community-based considerations that could impact the development of route options.
What will happen next?
Following the first public consultation, feedback will be reviewed and considered and the constraints analysis will be drafted. Using this information, specific route options will be developed. These options will then be evaluated using a detailed multi-criteria analysis (MCA). This type of analysis examines each route option and evaluates its potential impacts to numerous things including ecological impacts, visual impacts, historical impacts, geologic impacts, community impacts, impacts to landowners, etc. The results of the MCA will be used to identify the emerging preferred route.
The findings of this effort will be presented at the second public consultation to give everyone a chance to review the analysis and provide their feedback.
Have your say
Building a greenway that meets the needs of today and contributes to our collective vision for the future can only happen if we work together. This is why the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway project team is committed to sharing information with the public and working to collect feedback throughout the project development process. This collaboration will help guide the development of the greenway and ensure that all opportunities and concerns are accounted for.
The project is currently collecting submissions for the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway. All submissions must be submitted no later than 23:59 on 29th April 2022.
