Cork County Council have mobilised a contractor to carry out refurbishment works to the 5 No. existing pedestrian crossings in the Town. These works include the installation of raised table tops at each of the locations listed below to encourage motorists to maintain a lower speed when travelling through the town via the Main Street. Existing pedestrian crossing lights will also be replaced.
Refurbishment works on the Graveyard pedestrian crossing commenced on 14th February 2024. Once complete, refurbishment works on the other crossings will follow in order of sequence listed below over the coming weeks and months.

- Centra Pedestrian Crossing
In relation to the Centra Crossing, and subject to the satisfactory completion of a Section 38 process, close out of detail design and road safety audits, Cork County Council intend to relocate the Centra pedestrian crossing so that it is closer to the Broad Street bell mouth. The purpose of this is to provide improved accessibility for pedestrians who wish to cross the Main Street at this location.
New Crossings
In addition to the above, a new zebra crossing will be installed in front of the AIB as provided for under the previously approved Part 8 planning (see below). Please note that this is subject to close out of the detail design and road safety audits as appropriate.
A new at grade zebra crossing is to be installed at the top of Broad Street and road markings modiļ¬ed to indicate left in/left out traffic movements only. This is subject to the satisfactory completion of a Section 38 process, close out of the detail design and road safety audits as appropriate.
Bus Stops
Both bus stops to be relocated to new locations on Main Street as shown below between the Centra pedestrian crossing and Smiths Lane. Existing loading bays to be retained in current locations.
Further Works
Cork County Council propose to implement further works on Charleville Main Street between the New Line Junction and Smiths Lane. These works would be designed and implemented in accordance with the Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets (DMURS) https://www.dmurs.ie/, and subject to approval via the Part 8 Planning process and accompanying public consultation. It is anticipated that this Part 8 will be advertised mid-2024.
